Dr. Shermak has treated many Baltimore Breast Reconstruction patients. Please read more about what to expect from the procedure below.
What is Breast Reconstruction?
Breast Reconstruction surgery is typically performed after surgery for breast cancer, with removal of a portion or all of the breast tissue (mastectomy). Reconstruction may be performed immediately during mastectomy surgery or may be delayed to a later date depending on required oncologic care and patient desire. Reconstruction may be performed with implants or your own tissue, often coming from the upper back or abdomen. Implant surgery often requires initial expansion which is later converted to a permanent implant, either saline or silicone. Surgery may be considered for the opposite breast to achieve a better match, either with implants, fat grafting, lifting or reduction.
Reconstruction is also performed for congenital breast asymmetry and may also involve implants, fat grafting, lifting or reduction.
Who is a good candidate for Breast Reconstruction?
Good candidates for Breast Reconstruction are women in good health who are interested in regaining or improving upon their pre-mastectomy presentation, or for women who hope to achieve a more balanced appearance from hereditary breast mismatch. At consultation Dr. Shermak will discuss with you options for treatment, largely depending on your goals.
What is the recovery like for Breast Reconstruction?
Surgery is performed as an outpatient or in the hospital with a 1 to 2 night hospital stay, depending on the surgery needed. One may experience temporary discomfort, swelling, or numbness. If the breast implants caused symptoms prior to surgery, many women share that they actually feel more comfortable immediately after surgery! Most women resume regular low impact activity within a week and drive within 10 days. Heavy exercise and lifting are discouraged for a month.
