What is Spider Vein Treatment?

Dark textured background with subtle patterns.

Spider veins are small webs of red, purple or blue clusters or lines impacting the appearance of the skin.

Individuals prone to this may be genetically-susceptible or stand on their feet for prolonged periods of time. Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment for spider veins. This involves injecting a medication into the spider veins that acts to scar the vessels closed, eventually causing the veins to involute and disappear.

How much does Sclerotherapy cost?

Sclerotherapy treatments typically range between $500 and $1,500, depending on the extent of treatment required and the number of veins being addressed.

Who is a Good Candidate for Spider Vein Treatment?

Good candidates are men and women of all age groups interested in addressing unsightly spider veins. The veins need to be large enough to inject, but small enough to be responsive to sclerotherapy injection. Large, ropey varicose veins do not respond to this treatment and require more invasive treatment. Women who are pregnant should wait until after the pregnancy is complete.

During the initial consultation you will discuss with Dr. Shermak what you would like to improve so she can understand your expectations and determine how to best achieve your desired result. At that visit, a test treatment may take place to test the effectiveness of the sclerosant and skin tolerance.

A second visit is then arranged for a full treatment session. Multiple sessions of sclerotherapy may be necessary for more complete treatment. In some cases after treatment, other veins will grow into the treated area. These tend to not be as full or remarkable as the original spider veins and may be susceptible to treatment.

What is the Recovery Like After Spider Vein Treatment?

Treated veins will become inflamed, purple and more visible for a period of time while they react to the sclerosant. They will then involute. There may be some bruising. Regular exercise and activities may be resumed by the following day. Bruising may resolve better with Arnica ointment and oral tablets.
