What is a mommy makeover?

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and C-section lead to some unpredictable changes in a woman’s body, particularly in the breasts and abdomen. The breasts may lose volume, leading to deflation and sagging. Asymmetries in the breasts may also result. Abdominal skin tone, muscle strength, and contour may be impaired.

Mommy makeover surgery in Baltimore comprises a spectrum of breast and body contouring procedures to reverse the effects of pregnancy. Such procedures include our Baltimore breast augmentation, breast lift, a tummy tuck, back lift, thigh lift, fat grafting and/or liposuction. Sometimes facial procedures are added in to improve appearance from head to toe.

Improvements from Mommy Makeover surgery may even surpass the body you had prior to pregnancy, allowing this mommy to achieve the body she always desired. And as you know, a happy mom is critical to a happy family!

What is the recovery like for a mommy makeover?

Surgery tends to be performed on an outpatient basis. One may experience temporary discomfort, swelling, numbness, and bruising.

Patients are up and walking within hours of surgery. Most resume regular activities and return to low impact activity after 1 week. Heavy exercise and lifting are discouraged for a month. Routine, non-strenuous driving and errands are begun within a week to 10 days after surgery.

Can liposuction and a tummy tuck be safely performed at the same time?

Yes! Liposuction can amplify tummy tuck results. Liposuction should not be performed directly on the abdomen at the time of the tummy tuck, but may be safely performed in adjacent areas such as the back, waist and inner and outer thighs.

Dr. Shermak will discuss with you what is most safe for you to undergo surgically, considering your medical history and surgical goals.

Can a tummy tuck, breast augmentation, and liposuction be performed in one surgery?

Yes. These procedures are often performed together in a single stage for a mommy makeover: A tummy tuck typically takes about 1.5 hours, breast augmentation 1 hour, and liposuction up to 2 hours.

Dr. Shermak will discuss with you if you are a reasonable candidate and what you can achieve safely.

Many women prefer to coordinate these exact surgical procedures to minimize cost and downtime associated with multiple procedures and to achieve a comprehensive outcome.

They know that addressing, for example, only the breasts, will increase their disappointment in the shape of their abdomen, and will impair overall postoperative satisfaction delayed by staging procedures.

Oftentimes this combination of surgical procedures is performed as an outpatient, but should be performed in a facility accredited by a reputable organization.

What is the best way to prepare for a mommy makeover?

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with diet and exercise is the best variable in predicting optimal outcome and recovery with a mommy makeover in Baltimore.

Prior to surgery is not the time to “misbehave” with poor diet and an absence of exercise. Results are not as good in patients who are overweight or in bad shape.

Whatever a woman can do to improve her health profile is recommended, and along those lines, removing variables that present known problems, like smoking, poor diet and lack of exercise makes a big difference.

What is the minimum recovery time for a mommy makeover?

One week for non-strenuous activity after breast augmentation and liposuction only, with the recovery period increasing with multiplying procedures. You should be able to drive within one to two weeks, but may need to decrease the time you spend on your daily routine.

With surgical recovery, patients may get tired more easily. Also, an optimum surgical outcome may require less exertional activity for a period of time. Dr. Shermak will discuss the postoperative recovery period with you.

After a mommy makeover – When can I resume my intense workouts?

It will probably take at least one month to get back to a regular physical workout. Depending on the surgical procedures you undergo, you may be able to return to a low impact workout sooner than that.

What is the cost of a mommy makeover?

Each mommy makeover is especially customized to your exact needs. Because of this, the cost can vary quite a bit based on which procedures you choose and your aesthetic goals. Dr. Shermak will detail a comprehensive plan for your mommy makeover, and from there you’ll know the exact cost. Prices generally range between $8,000 and $20,000.

How soon can I do a mommy makeover if I’m overweight now?

If you think you can lose weight reasonably, then it is best to achieve weight loss first, and get to a stable weight for a period of at least a month. If significant weight loss is being considered, you may need a period of time for your body to equilibrate and stabilize nutritionally. During times of steep weight loss, healing may be impaired due to lack of nutrients in the body.

If your weight is stable and you have attempted weight loss without success, Dr. Shermak will meet with you to see what can be achieved safely with surgery. Many women are stalled and Dr. Shermak knows surgery may kickstart weight loss and a healthier lifestyle.

COVID-19 Update 03/15/2022

This is a new day, with new safety protocols. Our goal is to keep everyone safe and respect the continued concerns COVID-19 may present.

The state of Maryland is now fortunately downgraded to Yellow Status. COVID stress on the medical system has lessened and most areas in the state no longer mandate masks.

Currently in our office we are maintaining sterile surfaces and compulsive cleaning protocols – as always. We are requesting information about vaccination status, to particularly better help us prepare for patients interested in surgical procedures.

We are not mandating masks. We do respect our patients’ wishes and will wear a mask when requested to do so. We want our patients to be absolutely comfortable. All of our staff are vaccinated.

This is certainly an evolving issue and we will continue to pivot as COVID statistics change – hopefully for the better! Thank you!
