What is a mommy makeover?

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and C-section lead to some unpredictable changes in a woman’s body, particularly in the breasts and abdomen. The breasts may lose volume, leading to deflation and sagging. Asymmetries in the breasts may also result. Abdominal skin tone, muscle strength, and contour may be impaired.

Mommy Makeover surgery comprises a spectrum of breast and body contouring procedures to reverse the effects of pregnancy. Such procedures include our Baltimore breast augmentation, breast lift, a tummy tuck, back lift, thigh lift, fat grafting and/or liposuction. Sometimes facial procedures are added in to improve appearance from head to toe.

Improvements from Mommy Makeover surgery may even surpass the body you had prior to pregnancy, allowing this mommy to achieve the body she always desired. And as you know, a happy mom is critical to a happy family!

Who is a good candidate for a mommy makeover?

Good candidates for mommy makeover in Baltimore, MD are women in good health who have loss of fullness and shape in the breasts, and loss of abdominal strength and contour from pregnancy and possible C-section surgery.

During the initial consultation, you will discuss with Dr. Michele Shermak what you would like to improve so she can understand your expectations and determine how to best achieve the desired result. Surgery is customized to your desires and needs.

What is the recovery like for a mommy makeover?

Surgery tends to be performed on an outpatient basis. One may experience temporary discomfort, swelling, numbness, and bruising. Patients are up and walking within hours of surgery. Most resume regular activities and return to low impact activity after 1 week. Heavy exercise and lifting are discouraged for a month. Routine, non-strenuous driving and errands are begun within a week to 10 days after surgery.

Can liposuction and a tummy tuck be safely performed at the same time?

Yes! Liposuction can amplify tummy tuck results. Liposuction should not be performed directly on the abdomen at the time of the tummy tuck, but may be safely performed in adjacent areas such as the back, waist and inner and outer thighs. Dr. Shermak will discuss with you what is most safe for you to undergo surgically, considering your medical history and surgical goals.

Can a tummy tuck, breast augmentation, and liposuction be performed in one surgery?

Yes. These procedures are often performed together in a single stage for a mommy makeover: A tummy tuck typically takes about 1.5 hours, breast augmentation 1 hour, and liposuction up to 2 hours. Dr. Shermak will discuss with you if you are a reasonable candidate and what you can achieve safely.

Many women prefer to coordinate these exact surgical procedures to minimize cost and downtime associated with multiple procedures and to achieve a comprehensive outcome. They know that addressing, for example, only the breasts, will increase their disappointment in the shape of their abdomen, and will impair overall postoperative satisfaction delayed by staging procedures. Oftentimes this combination of surgical procedures is performed as an outpatient, but should be performed in a facility accredited by a reputable organization.

What is the best way to prepare for a mommy makeover?

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with diet and exercise is the best variable in predicting optimal outcome and recovery with a mommy makeover. Prior to surgery is not the time to “misbehave” with poor diet and an absence of exercise. Results are not as good in patients who are overweight or in bad shape. Whatever a woman can do to improve her health profile is recommended, and along those lines, removing variables that present known problems, like smoking, poor diet and lack of exercise makes a big difference.

What is the minimum recovery time for a mommy makeover?

One week for non-strenuous activity after breast augmentation and liposuction only, with the recovery period increasing with multiplying procedures. You should be able to drive within one to two weeks, but may need to decrease the time you spend on your daily routine. With surgical recovery, patients may get tired more easily. Also, an optimum surgical outcome may require less exertional activity for a period of time. Dr. Shermak will discuss the postoperative recovery period with you.

After a mommy makeover – When can I resume my intense workouts?

It will probably take at least one month to get back to a regular physical workout. Depending on the surgical procedures you undergo, you may be able to return to a low impact workout sooner than that.

How soon can I do a mommy makeover if I’m overweight now?

If you think you can lose weight reasonably, then it is best to achieve weight loss first, and get to a stable weight for a period of at least a month. If significant weight loss is being considered, you may need a period of time for your body to equilibrate and stabilize nutritionally. During times of steep weight loss, healing may be impaired due to lack of nutrients in the body.

If your weight is stable and you have attempted weight loss without success, Dr. Shermak will meet with you to see what can be achieved safely with surgery. Many women are stalled and Dr. Shermak knows surgery may kickstart weight loss and a healthier lifestyle.

I am not happy with the results from mommy makeover surgery performed elsewhere. Although my surgeon came highly recommended, he is not interested in my concerns and I am dissatisfied and disappointed. What should I do?

View Update Virtual Consultation

We are officially open, thanks to Governor Hogan!

We welcome new patients and are looking forward to performing elective surgical procedures, starting the week of May 11.

This is a new day, with new safety protocols. Our goal is to keep everyone safe and respect the continued risk COVID-19 presents. For this reason, we will be instituting the following protocols:

  • We will have Sandy stationed at our entryway with sterilizer and a COVID-19 survey for our new patients to fill out. Sandy will also check your temperature and collect your paperwork at the door – our medical intake form can be filled out prior to your coming to the office, or you can fill it out after you arrive.
  • Please bring a mask for any in-office visits. If you are coming for surgery, please bring a paper mask if you have one. For any other visits, cloth masks or paper masks are fine.
  • We need any patient waiting to be seen to wait in your car until we can safely accommodate you in an exam room. We need to respect social distancing and are spacing our patients out to assure safety.
  • We can only allow the patient to come in to the office for examination. Friends or family will need to wait outside the office.
  • For those assisting our postoperative patients on the day of surgery: we ask that you kindly wait in your car and we will call you in to discuss postoperative instructions.
  • I am continuing to schedule Virtual Consultations which is exciting and new! Check out my Resources section or header at drshermak.com to get started!

I look forward to seeing you soon!

As of July 1st, the staff members at The Plastic Surgery Center of Maryland will no longer routinely be wearing masks following the state guidelines per Governor Hogan.

All of our staff members are vaccinated.

If any patient would prefer that the medical staff member caring for them wear a mask, please let us know and we will gladly do so.

We treat patients with compormised immune systems and we need to be respectful of their needs.

We are asking patients who are not fully vaccinated to please wear masks while in our office so that we may continue to safely accomodate our patients with weakened immune systems.

Thank you!
