What is Botox?

Repetitive muscle action in the face may cause wrinkles, typically in the forehead, between the brows, and at the sides of the eyes (smile lines/crow’s feet). BOTOX weakens muscle action, smoothing the wrinkles.

Additionally, with the weakening of specific muscles, those muscles with opposing action become stronger, so treatment of crow’s feet will not only smooth wrinkles on the sides of the eye. Still, it will also lift the tail of the brow. BOTOX is composed of Botulinum, which is the active ingredient that weakens muscle action.

Areas treated by BOTOX include:

  • The upper lip
  • The corners of the lips
  • The eyebrow area
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Wrinkles and lines in the lower lids
  • Dimples in the chin
  • Creases and wrinkles in the neck

What are the benefits of BOTOX?

  • Safe, effective, non-surgical
  • Curbs dynamic wrinkles and lines
  • Rolls back the clock on facial aging
  • Smoothes and revitalizes the complexion
  • Boosts self-confidence
  • No downtime or discomfort

Who is a good candidate for BOTOX in Baltimore?

Good candidates are men and women in their 20’s and older who are looking to reduce facial wrinkles and creases. Other applications beyond treating the brow and around the eyes include reversal of downturned corners of the mouth and neckbands. All clients should be in good physical and mental health, with realistic expectations for improvement rather than perfection.

During the initial consultation, you will discuss with Dr. Shermak what you would like to improve so she can understand your expectations and determine how to achieve your desired result best. At that visit, the treatment may take place. A second treatment is recommended 4 to 6 months later to achieve optimal results.

What is the recovery like after BOTOX?

For 24 hours, the area treated should not be rubbed or massaged and bending over needs to be avoided (exercise, gardening, cleaning floors) to avoid migration of the product. Regular exercise and activities may be resumed by the following day. Some clients bruise with treatment, particularly at the side of the eyes, but this will resolve quickly and be helped by taking Arnica tablets.

Why choose Dr. Shermak?

The way you look and feel directly affects your self-confidence. In addition to treating Baltimore BOTOX patients, Dr. Shermak takes care of many Baltimore Sculptra, blepharoplasty, brow lift, facelift, facial fat grafting, and facial liposuction clients. Undergoing multiple treatments at once can not only save money it can also cut down on recovery time. Please visit these pages to learn more or speak with Dr. Shermak about these other options during your consultation.

How long do the results of BOTOX last?

On average, your improvement will continue for around 3-4 months, at which time you can elect to repeat the treatment with Dr. Shermak.

Is the procedure painful?

If you have ever tweezed an eyelash or eyebrow hair, then you are well-prepared for the discomfort level associated with the BOTOX procedure. Dr. Shermak is extremely gentle and provides a numbing agent that makes the injection virtually painless. Most find it’s over before they even know it happened.

Is treatment with BOTOX covered by insurance?

Unfortunately, procedures performed for strictly cosmetic reasons often don’t get approved by medical insurance carriers. However, if you are undergoing BOTOX treatment for medical purposes such as migraine headaches, there may be an opportunity for reimbursement. Check with your carrier to learn more.

Is there any downside to the treatment?

The only downside comes when BOTOX injections are performed by someone without adequate professional experience and certification, as sometimes happens in unregulated med spas. While it is a simple procedure, administering BOTOX requires a high degree of precision and artistry. It should only be attempted by a board-certified plastic surgeon such as Baltimore’s Dr. Shermak. This prevents unwanted side effects and points towards a final result that appears both beautiful and natural.

View Update Virtual Consultation

We are officially open, thanks to Governor Hogan!

We welcome new patients and are looking forward to performing elective surgical procedures, starting the week of May 11.

This is a new day, with new safety protocols. Our goal is to keep everyone safe and respect the continued risk COVID-19 presents. For this reason, we will be instituting the following protocols:

  • We will have Sandy stationed at our entryway with sterilizer and a COVID-19 survey for our new patients to fill out. Sandy will also check your temperature and collect your paperwork at the door – our medical intake form can be filled out prior to your coming to the office, or you can fill it out after you arrive.
  • Please bring a mask for any in-office visits. If you are coming for surgery, please bring a paper mask if you have one. For any other visits, cloth masks or paper masks are fine.
  • We need any patient waiting to be seen to wait in your car until we can safely accommodate you in an exam room. We need to respect social distancing and are spacing our patients out to assure safety.
  • We can only allow the patient to come in to the office for examination. Friends or family will need to wait outside the office.
  • For those assisting our postoperative patients on the day of surgery: we ask that you kindly wait in your car and we will call you in to discuss postoperative instructions.
  • I am continuing to schedule Virtual Consultations which is exciting and new! Check out my Resources section or header at drshermak.com to get started!

I look forward to seeing you soon!

As of July 1st, the staff members at The Plastic Surgery Center of Maryland will no longer routinely be wearing masks following the state guidelines per Governor Hogan.

All of our staff members are vaccinated.

If any patient would prefer that the medical staff member caring for them wear a mask, please let us know and we will gladly do so.

We treat patients with compormised immune systems and we need to be respectful of their needs.

We are asking patients who are not fully vaccinated to please wear masks while in our office so that we may continue to safely accomodate our patients with weakened immune systems.

Thank you!
