A Brief History of Kybella

Kybella was introduced in 2015 by the FDA as a safe, non-invasive solution for reducing undesirable submental fat. Prior to Kybella, clients’ only choice was to receive liposuction or plastic surgery to trim the region under the chin. Now with one strategic session of injections, a tighter, more youthful and attractive aesthetic can be achieved – and all without lengthy downtimes or discomfort.

How does Kybella work?

Kybella relies on the power of deoxycholic acid molecules. These compounds are found organically in the body, where they work to dissolve and emulsify fat cells, releasing them as waste. Once the Kybella formula is injected, it goes to work on slimming and contouring your double chin.

How does Kybella differ from liposuction?

The main benefit of receiving treatment with Kybella rather than liposuction, is that with lipo you accept the risks of surgery, as well as undergoing anesthesia and longer recovery times. While lipo is performed in a single visit to the office, Kybella may require several sessions to achieve the desired result.

Who is a good candidate for Kybella?

Kybella is appropriate for clients over 18 who are in good health, physically as well as psychologically. Patients should have reasonable expectations for improvement based on their consultation with Dr. Shermak.

Who is not a good candidate for Kybella?

If you are suffering from loose, sagging skin in addition to a double chin, Kybella may not be the best solution, as liposuction can better address both issues at once. Non-surgical skin-tightening is also an option in this case.

Kybella should not be used by those who are nursing or are pregnant, or by those who have experienced difficulty swallowing in the past. If you have previously received plastic surgery around the neck and chin area, or are currently taking blood thinners, be sure to let the doctor know.

How long do my results last?

Kybella is considered a permanent solution to unwanted submental fat, and therefore once your ideal aesthetic has been achieved, you will not need to keep undergoing treatment in order to maintain your results. Kybella will reduce the fat cells for good.

What is the procedure like?

One treatment with Kybella may involve up to 50 mini injections to reshape the area under the chin. The total treatment time is typically under 30 minutes. You may be required to return for additional follow-up as the fat is slowly flushed from the body.

Dr. Shermak will ensure you are comfortable at all times during your visit. She may use a topical anesthetic to numb the area, or an ice pack. After the procedure, you may take over-the-counter painkillers if needed. Clients can return to work or other activities right after their Kybella injections.

COVID-19 Update 03/15/2022

This is a new day, with new safety protocols. Our goal is to keep everyone safe and respect the continued concerns COVID-19 may present.

The state of Maryland is now fortunately downgraded to Yellow Status. COVID stress on the medical system has lessened and most areas in the state no longer mandate masks.

Currently in our office we are maintaining sterile surfaces and compulsive cleaning protocols – as always. We are requesting information about vaccination status, to particularly better help us prepare for patients interested in surgical procedures.

We are not mandating masks. We do respect our patients’ wishes and will wear a mask when requested to do so. We want our patients to be absolutely comfortable. All of our staff are vaccinated.

This is certainly an evolving issue and we will continue to pivot as COVID statistics change – hopefully for the better! Thank you!
