Breast Cancer Doesn’t Just Happen in October

There was recently a very interesting Q+A published in the NY Times about long term significance of Ductal Carcinoma in situ (DCIS), partiularly in light of the findings of a new outcomes study assessing surgical treatment of DCIS. The study is an attempt to identify if DCIS is a precursor of breast cancer or an isolated risk factor of breast cancer.

This study certainly indicates that steps like protective mastectomy in the opposite, unaffected breast in women without gene positivity is not warranted.
